AN eleven-year-old golfer proved he can putt it with the best by winning Ross Golf Club's re-scheduled third winter Stableford.

With 79 members taking part, Harry Griffiths' success was even more impressive considering it was the first time he had competed in an adult golf event.

Harry, who is from Ledbury and studies at John Masefield High School, has been one of the leading lights in Ross Club's Junior Academy since becoming a member in July 2013.

"In the care of head professional Tim Hall and his assistants within the school of Golf, which operates at the Ross Club, Harry's dedicated attitude has seen him develop personally and his game flourish and prosper as a result," said Ross GC spokesman Keith Ray.

"His hard work at structured practice and regular coaching sessions has paid enormous dividends in his continuous all-round improvement and notably in forming a stronger technique over the winter period.

"This was much in evidence in Harry's game on the day, resulting in an exceptional 45 Stableford points score where his front nine holes included three pars and a birdie."

In their bid to claim the six places available to qualify for the final of the Barnfield Trophy, Harry was chased by five seniors in Handicap Division 2.

Colin Price , who scored 45 points, Geoff Evans (43), Jo Snowball and Harry Beach (42 each) and Graham Weare (41) ultimately achieved their objectives.

In Handicap Division 1, qualifiers were Rod Buchan, who topped the list with 40 points off a 12 handicap, Doug Duncanson (39), Nigel Yates, Nigel Montague and Geoff Robinson (all 38) and Michael Williams (37).

Meanwhile, Kim Sampson, Nick Swan and Steve Phillips won a highly successful Florida Scramble Medal event.

Runner-up were Don Punnett, Andy Baldwin and Keith Ray, with Alan Thompson, Richard Escolme and Tiger Dixon coming in third.

Seniors captain Richard Topping also took a squad to Worcestershire Golf Club in their quest to get a result in their latest Winter league match.

Ross narrowly lost 5-3, with Ross's wins coming from Tim Ridgden and Barry Le Feuvre (2/1) and Andy Baldwin and Steve Bartholomew (3/2) with halved matches involving Peter Chapman and Arthur Reid and Steve Martin and Mike Harris.
