MORE coaches are being recruited at Pentathlon Hereford due to its growing success.

A training day will be held at Lucton School on Sunday, Marc 22, with many events also lined up.

"We asked Pentathlon GB to invest in Hereford and were surprised by a very quick response and a large enough sum of money to get us started," said Rachel Wreyford, who set up the group alongside Su Smith.

"We planned three training days and have deployed two of those already.

"Both the January and February training days were sell-outs and now we are increasing the size of our coaching team to cope with the demand for March.

"Due to this immediate success, we are in the process of planning events throughout 2015 and have received even further support from Penthalon GB.

"What's nice is local business Brightstripe are giving us a guiding help to find additional funding opportunities."

One-hour taster sessions in swimming, running, shooting and fencing will be held at the training day, with an Easter camp, that could include horse riding, to take place from April 7 to 9.

"All staff at the school have been very positive about hosting these events and keen to support the developing programme," said Wreyford.

"The canteen is now transformed into the Olympic Village and athletes are treated as future stars.

"The growing numbers are not just through local support as athletes are travelling as far as Pembrokeshire, Evesham, Cirencester and Bristol to attend.

Smith added that they want to hear from anyone who want to further their coaching career.

"It's great that we are putting Hereford on the map for top class training for the five disciplines of Modem Pentathlon," said Smith.

Two pentathletes who have benefited are Becky Wreyford and Charlotte Smith.

They started pony club triathlons last year and enjoyed the challenge of shooting, swimming and running.

By March last year, they started winning rosettes and now have a weekly programme.

"Within pentathlon, they started competing in the biathlons and qualified for the National Biathlon Championships and English Schools Biathlon Championships held at Olympic Park in London," said Rachel Wreyford.

"With Pony Club, they have both qualified to represent their area at the National Triathlon Finals in Milton Keynes and in fencing qualified for the National Fencing Championships in Sheffield.

"For the future, they are hoping to have a go at the Modern Pentathlon Championships in June and the Modern Tetrathlon Championships in September, both in Solihull."

Meanwhile, weekly running sessions are being held at Hereford Leisure Centre from 6.30pm to 70.30pm every Wednesday.

Coaches are Chris Hazels and Kylie Mansfield, both of whom have international experience.
