MARDEN Cricket Club will once again have to find a new home after being told that they cannot carry on using Pentland Gardens.

The village side finished last season at the Hereford ground after they had to vacate their long-standing home in the grounds of the Volunteer Inn in Marden.

The club were there for 29 years but the landlord decided not to renew their licence.

Marden's Nick Ashton said they have now been told by Herefordshire Cricket Ltd that they cannot carry on playing at Pentland Gardens due to it being set aside for junior teams.

"It's disappointing but we just have to accept it," said Ashton.

"They have junior stuff out there which is their concern and they have made it clear to us that we won't be playing there next season."

The race is now on for Marden to have a home for the next campaign and Ashton says the club have held talks with Canon Frome to see if they could play there.

"They have come back into the Marches League from the Worcestershire League, so we are still positive that we can find an alternative venue and keep it going," said Ashton.

"We really appreciate Canon Frome's assistance and look forward to sorting something out with them."

Marden finished third in GB Liners Marches League Division Two last season, with Brian Weaver being the club's bowler of the year and captain Sam Pratley earning the top batsman prize.

The club's senior player of the year was Pete Atkin, while Laurie Steele was clubman of the year.
