WESTFIELDS manager Sean Edwards is expecting a tough battle after his side were drawn away to Worksop Town in the third round of the FA Vase.

The city side progressed with goals from Mike Tambling and Craig Jones (penalty) seeing them through against Leicestershire side St Andrews, who reached the semi-finals of the competition last season.

"It will be a tough task and they should be a good outfit," said Edwards.

"They are the only team to beat Long Eaton, who are top of our league, so far this season and they beat them comfortably 3-0.

"It's disappointing that we have to play away and to travel so far - we are the team the furthest south in this section playing the team the furthest north.

"They play in a good league but I'm sure they won't be looking forward to playing us."

Worksop, from the Northern Counties East League, progressed to the third round with a 2-1 win over Ellistown & Ibstock, conquerors of Hereford United in the FA Cup earlier this season.

Ellistown & Ibstock are 11th in the East Midlands Counties League which is topped by St Andrews who gave Westfields a competitive outing in their second round tie.

"I went to watch them the previous Tuesday and I knew it would be a tough game," said Edwards.

"It was a proper cup tie played in a good atmosphere and they brought a few supporters with them."

Westfields made a lively start and Nathaniel Lewars hit the top of the bar from a Carl Morgan cross.

But the home side did not have to wait long to take the lead with Michael Tambling finding space in the Saints box and side-stepping a defender before shooting into the bottom corner.

Nine minutes later, though, Shay Brennan fired past Matt Gwynne to level the scores.

"We played really well for the first 15 minutes," said Edwards. "But then they scored a well-worked goal and were on top for the next 10 minutes or so.

"But then at half-time we changed our formation as they were playing in a slightly different style to when I had watched them in their previous game.

"After that, although they had a couple of chances, we were the team camped in their half."

They pressure paid off seven minutes from time when a handling offence by Luay Bashir presented Craig Jones with a chance to restore the home side's lead from the penalty spot.

The midfielder nervelessly shot home from the spot-kick into the top corner of the net.

"I didn't watch the penalty - I never do when we get one," admitted Edwards.

"If he had missed, I would have said that you have to brave enough to take the penalty in the first place, but Craig has been playing well for us and has come back into the side after getting over knee and hamstring injuries.

"I have said to the players that our best signing this season has been Jonny Evans, who was previously the physio at Edgar Street.

"He has been brilliant and has worked wonders in keeping the players on the pitch.

"It was a relief that the penalty went in, though. I would not really have fancied extra-time or having to go up there for a replay in midweek."

Victory over St Andrews was worth £1,200 in prize money to Westfields who, as one of the 64 remaining sides in the competition, will now travel to Worksop on December 6.
