Long Eaton 2 Westfields 0

WESTFIELDS opened their campaign in the newly renamed Midland Football League Premier Division with a defeat at newcomers Long Eaton.

The former Northern Counties East side scored twice in the second half to seals the points.

Tom Boyle had a chance to put Westfields ahead after an early cross from Luke Griffiths but it took a fine tackle from Phil Glover to prevent a goal at the other end.

Glover, as well as Alec Winstone and Zac Sirrell, had to work hard defensively before he had a chance to head Westfields ahead just before the break but mistimed his leap to a Craig Jones corner.

After the break, Ross Parker was left unmarked to head in the opening goal from six yards.

And the home side increased their lead on 67 minutes when Shaun Rickford was unchallenged to head in a free-kick.

Matt Gwynne prevented a third home goal, pulling off a brilliant save to keep out a penalty after a foul by Glover on Jermaine Palmer.

Late on, home keeper Richard Hankey saved superbly from Dene Whittal-Williams as Westfields went in search of a consolation goal.
