CYCLING ace Adam Blythe has hit top gear to win the National Criterium Championships in Hull.

Blythe races for the Hereford-based NFTO professional cycling team and he will be wearing the National Jersey formerly on the shoulders of team mate Russ Downing.

The 24-yrear-old was involved in a battle with Chris Opie, from Rapha Condor JLT, in the final stages of the men’s section of the 2014 British Cycling National Circuit Race Championships.

Blythe swept past his rival just before the finishing line.

"I'm ecstatic," said Blythe, after the race.

"I knew I could do well and it was a case of getting everything right on the night. I'm absolutely thrilled with the result.

“Once it got to three laps to go I knew we could stay away then and it was just a case of doing as little as possible but as much as possible to try and save something for the sprint.”

NFTO Pro Cycling’s James McCallum had applied the pressure in the early stages.

Men’s result: 1 Adam Blythe NFTO 59:12:00; 2 Chris Opie Rapha Condor JLT; 3 Graham Briggs Rapha Condor JLT. Other selected results: 5 Dean Downing NFTO; 6 James McCallum NFTO; 7 Dale Appleby NFTO; 15 Russell Downing NFTO; 24 Sam Williams NFTO.
