BROCKHAMPTON’S fast bowler Callum Stewart has been signed to a summer contract by County Championship side Somerset.

The Herefordshire player will spend four days each week training with Somerset and playing for the seconds after being recommended to them by their former fast bowler Steffan Jones.

Stewart said: “I got in contact with Steffan to ask for advice about my bowling and he put me in contact with Somerset.”

He also said he had a “great experience” when he travelled with Somerset to South Africa for a pre-season training camp which included both the first and second teams.

Stewart sees his future in the longer form of the game despite the increased popularity of 20/20.

He said: “I prefer the red ball, I have to admit.”

Stewart played for Brockhampton last weekend and has now returned to Somerset for training and travelled to Bishops Stortford for a Seconds XI Trophy match with Essex.

He said: “I’ve got a flat in Taunton, but most games finish by Thursday so I’m able to come and play for Brockhampton and Herefordshire.”

Brockhampton’s first team captain Ben Stebbings said it could only be good for the club to have Stewart playing for Somerset.
