A FATHER and son from Presteigne travelled up the A49 to meet their rugby league hero who was taking part in a gruelling challenge.

Lee Briers, who made more than 400 appearances for Warrington Wolves from 1998 to 2013 and was capped 23 times by Wales, was competing in a 12-day trek from Lands End to John O'Groats.

He was raising money for the Steve Prescott Foundation - a charity set up in memory of the former St Helens, Hull and Wakefield star who died from stomach cancer last year.

Shaun Ford heard about the challenge so set off to try and meet him with his three-year-old son Thomas.

"I heard that he was going up the A49, so when I finished work I went up to try and find him," said Ford, who works at Kingspan Insulation near Pembridge.

"We regularly go to watch Warrington because it's our nearest rugby league team.

"We talked to Lee about what he was doing and that it was a great cause - he was quite surprised to find Warrington fans from around here."
