LUCTONIANS’ try-scoring sensation Drew Cheshire has not been offered a new deal by Premiership outfit Gloucester Rugby Club.

The 22-year-old winger is attracting interest from Jersey after being told he will not be staying at Kingsholm for a second term.

Cheshire was on the bench for Gloucester last Saturday in a narrow 28-27 final-day defeat at relegated Worcester Warriors.

He is dual registered with Luctonians – and had another excellent season at Mortimer Park, topping their try-scoring charts with 22 touchdowns in National League Two North.

Luctonians’ director of rugby, Alex Davidson, said: “It is disappointing that Drew is not being kept on at Gloucester but they have had a difficult season at Gloucester and these things happen.

“Drew was on a junior academy contract at Gloucester and they have given him some financial support to help him find a new club.

“Jersey are hot on his heels and are back in National One.

“I am trying to get him to talk to the likes of Bedford and Nottingham because it’s a midway point and Jersey is a long way from home.

“He’s a very quiet lad and perhaps that has gone against him.

“Drew has got very fast leg speed and has broken through a lot of first and second tackles.”

Davidson, who has been forced to retire from playing due to a shoulder injury, will be remaining in his post at Luctonians next season.

But he insists the Mortimer Park outfit must recruit a backs’ coach.

“Ideally, we need to get a backs coach,” said Davidson.

“I am getting on to a few contacts and we have a rugby meeting this week.

“Jimmy Norris combined playing, captaining and coaching on a Thursday which is a very hard thing to do.

“We did not score as many tries as we would have liked to last season.

“We will need to be looking to bring in five or six new players and a new coach to bring something extra that we seemed to miss.”

Luctonians finished 10th in their fourth season at National League Two North - four points adrift of seventh place.

Former captain Paul Hulland has retired from National League rugby after 188 appearances in total for Luctonians.

The powerhouse forwad scored 88 tries for Luctonians, including 58 touchdowns in the National League.

Davidson praised the efforts from Mike Jones, Chris Condliffe and Nathan Roy-Smith, who has gone to Australia.

“Mike Jones started at hooker and was involved in all 30 games,” said Davidson.

“Mike ended up as at loose head and had an excellent season and boxed above his weight.”

“With the retirement of George Thomas, Chris Condliffe took over as hooker and Dan Smith came into the second row and was a line-out option and back-row technician.

“Nathan Roy-Smith has been great coming from 7 to 9 and playing three quarters of the season.”

Davidson expects another strong division next term.

We had four big teams in the division this season just gone and we probably should have pushed up to seventh place in the table,” he said.

“Ampthill were runners-up in National League Two South and are looking to be level transferred to our division.

“Again, I think here will be three or four teams in our division next season who are capable of winning the title.”
