BOWLS Hereford opened their season with the annual match against West Glamorgan at Kingsland and were defeated by 125 shots to 93, winning on only one rink.

John Wear skipped the successful rink, well backed by Hubert Turberfield at third, with Steve Jones and Jack Gray at the front end and lost only

seven ends to win by 19 - 13.

Ron Perry's rink led 19-16 after 19 ends before losing four shots on the remaining two ends to go down 20-19 in a very close match, and Don Pugh's rink fought back from 19-11 down after 15 ends to finish 22-18 down.

The rink skipped by Russ Jones were down only 8-7 after 11 ends, but managed to win only three of the remaining ends to finish 24-13 down and John Colley's rink were always behind and finally finished 21-13 down.

The heaviest defeat was suffered by the rink skipped by Dave Holloway and were down 12-6 after 10 ends before finally losing by 25-11.
