HEREFORD Sixth Form College students have helped the West Midlands region to third place at the 36th British Colleges Sport National Championships in Bath.
Three individual athletes and the women’s hockey team were among 17 athletes who represented Hereford Sixth Form College and the West Midlands.
College spokesman Beky Williams said: “Even though the Wilkinson Sword was handed over to the South West region, our students should be extremely proud of their contribution.”
Swimmers Thomas Hitchin and Carla Thornewell shone for the West Midlands and their displays led to a silver and bronze medal places for the men’s and women’s teams in the 50m freestyle relay respectively.
Thornewell also achieved a third-place in the 100m freestyle and Hitchin was seventh in the 200m freestyle.
Megan Turner helped the West Midlands team to a silver medal after finishing 21st out of 60 competitors in the 4.5km cross country race.
She was the fifth fastest in the eight-strong West Midlands team and the top six- counted towards the region’s point tally.
And on the hockey pitch, the women’s hockey team were fifth overall after playing seven fixtures, against some of the most renowned college teams in England and Wales. The Hereford team
won one and lost two. They also drew with the overall winning team.
