Wye Amateur Boxing Club switch to new premises at Hereford Lads Club

BOXING has returned to Hereford Lads Club.

Wye Amateur Boxing Club have moved to the premises from Hinton Community Centre.

The club are holding an open day this Saturday between noon and 2.30pm.

A club spokesman said: “Everyone is welcome to come down and meet the boxers, and coaches and, hopefully, some old faces from the club will be more than welcome.

“Negotiations with Hereford Lads Club were put in place to see if there was a possibility there could be a move and the venue has become the new club premises.

“The new club started off buzzing with lots of interest and the club turning out some good talent from up and coming boys and girls competing in contests all over the Midlands both junior and senior boxers.”

Del Strachan, Neil Gibbons and Allan Ford all remain with the club.

Allan Ford, one of the coaches at the Wye club, boxed at the Lads Club from 1980 until 1986 when he moved to another club.

He trained youngsters at the Vortex Club and then moved to Bullingham lane until that was also demolished for housing development.

He carried on looking for premises to train the lads and was offered the opportunity arose to start a new gym with British Champion Darren Dazzo Williams at the Hinton.

Jake Price, a junior boxer, had his first bout, losing out to a majority decision but Harry Youll was failed to get to the Birmingham venue due to traffic problems.

Three more boxers will be competing tomorrow (Friday) with Niall Penson and Youll in Gloucester and Dean Evans defending his belt in Birmingham.

Opening times; Monday: women’s boxfit 6.30pm to 8pm; Tuesday and Thursday night: Boxing Training Juniors 6.30pm to 7.30pm; and Seniors/boxers 7.30pm to 8.30pm; Wednesday night: mixed circuit training 6.30pm to 8pm.
