WYE Police boxer Dean Evans has successfully defended his Inter counties belt in a thrilling contest.

Evans' opponent, Ashkan Talegani from Birmingham, started fast, firing hooks and straight power shots from all angles, shading the first round.

However, Evans drew inspiration from the cheers of his large band of travelling support and, from the beginning of the second round, met fire with fire and took the fight to his opponent and grabbed the initiative, catching his opponent with heavy shots forcing his opponent onto the back foot throughout the round.

"The final round was a thriller, with neither willing to give ground," said coach Del Strachan. "But Dean's sheer bull-like determination, skill and his will to win got him a deserved split decision win."

"I'm thrilled to retain the belt," said Evans. "It was a close fight, but I would not be denied."

Evans is now looking forward to his next fight when a further successful defence of his title will mean that he wins the belt outright.
