HEREFORD Whitecross Club's Tom Burton has earned a place in the England over-55 squash squad after reaching the semi-final of the North West of England Squash Masters event at Grove Park Manchester.

Burton beat Nick Scarle (Cheshire) 3-0 (9/4 9/3 9/2) in the first round to earn a quarter-final tie with Hertfordshire county player David Wells, one of Burton's competitors for an England squad place.

After making a nervous start and losing the first game, Burton increased the intensity of his game to take the match 3-1 (5/9 9/2 9/1 9/4).

The semi-final was extremely close and, after leading 2-1 against Ian Bradburn (Lancashire), Burton went down 3-2 after losing 9-7 in the fifth and final game. (4/9,9/1,10/8,3/9, 7/9).

Burton now hopes to be selected for the Home Internationals in Cardiff on April 26/27.

Ian then went on to win the final beating England Captain Stuart Hardy 3-1 9/3 1/9 10/9 9 /1
