AFTER a barren start to the season, Westside celebrated their second successive win when they saw off Elmdon 37-32 in the West Midlands Netball League Division Two.
The starting line up of GS - Harriet Rimmer, GA Kerry Amos, WA Anna Mulderrig, C Rebecca Griffin, WD Kate Pearce, GD Kayleigh Mumford and GK - Steph Snowzell capitalised on early defensive turnovers from Mumford and Snowzell with accurate shooting from Amos and Rimmer building up a 9-7 first-quarter lead.
The advantage grew to 17-13 at half-time with tight marking from Pearce and Griffin forcing errors from Elmdon.
Georgi Wood came on at centre with Griffin moving to WA with Mulderrig and Amos in the shooting circle, enabling more movement in their attacking third as Wood and Griffin linked well to find space and feed the shooters.
But an Elmdon attacking change worked in their favour and the gap began to reduce before the strong defensive unit of Mumford and Snowzell ensured that Westside stayed ahead 25-23 at three-quarter time.
For the last quarter, Rimmer moved to GS and Griffin to WD which really pushed Westside on in their final quarter with some accurate shooting and excellent play from player-of-the-match Griffin earning the victory in a match which both relegation-threatened teams needed to win.
Westside's confidence will have been lifted as they seek the additional two games which should keep them in the West Midlands League for a sixth year.
