WESTSIDE are off the mark in Division Two of the West Midlands Netball League after recorded their first win 40-38 in a competitive match against Foxes.

Westside made a promising opening with the starting line-up of Steph Snowzell GK, Kayleigh Mumford GD, Rebecca Griffin WD, Anna Mulderrig C, Harriet Rimmer WA, Kerry Amos GA and Debbie Bowdley GS.

Strong in defence early on, Mumford and Snowzell held tight in the circle to force errors from Foxes that Amos and Bowdley were able to take advantage of.

But Foxes did not back down and got stronger throughout the quarter as their defence restricted space in the circle, managing to turn long balls into the circle as they edged to a 10-8 quarter-time lead.

Foxes brought on a new centre who was able to make strong drives to the corners of their attacking circle to enable the shooters better positions.

Westside stood strong in their attack, however, with Rimmer and Mulderrig moving well and finding Bowdley effectively meaning they were still in the contest with a half time score of 23-20 to Foxes.

At half-time, Rimmer moved to shooter and Bowdley to GK, pushing everyone up a position.

This proved highly effective for the city team as Snowzell and Bowdley denied Foxes attack any movement and player-of-the-match Mumford forced her player out of the game.

Griffin and Mulderrig linked well through mid-court with Amos and Rimmer’s movement timed to perfection, enabling good balls into the circle in great shooting positions.

Westside pulled themselves right back into the game with the score all square at three-quarter time, 31-31.

In the final quarter, Amos and Rimmer came under pressure as Foxes tried to deny them space, but they pushed through to keep the scoring up.

The defensive combination of Bowdley and Snowzell held strong and enabled several turnovers along with excellent individual interceptions from Griffin and Mumford enabled Westside to pull ahead for a narrow win.
