ANOTHER local point-to-point has been washed away.

The Ross Harriers fixture at Garnons, which had been scheduled for Sunday, March 2.

Secretary, Verity Look, reported that the cancellation followed a recent inspection of the waterlogged track, as supporters had been unable to prepare the course, and conditions were unlikely to improve enough to allow the fences to be positioned.

However, the monsoon conditions have not prevented some local trainers from notching up winners farther afield this season. Downton-based Alstair Ralph, has recently sent out winners at both Barbury Castle and Larkhill with Hall Kelly and Stratford Stroller respectively, while Steve Flook made the journey from Shobdon to Black Forest Lodge in Devon a meaningful one when Mrs Vaughan’s Cashwell romped home unchallenged.

Jeremy Mahot made a flying start to his season when Peter Corbett’s maiden, Upton Venture battled clear at the new Heythrop course at Cocklebarrow. The local Leading Lady Rider, Ali Galliers-Pratt, also began her season on a high note at Chaddesley Corbett when partnering Bubbly Breeze, who she trains at Cleobury Mortimer, to a 20-1 victory.

The South Herefordshire Hunt committee will be crossing their fingers that the weather relents enough for them to prepare the Garnons course for their meeting on Sunday, March 16. Until then, local point-to-point enthusiasts will continue to travel in search of the silverware.
