HEREFORD boxer Lee Jenkins has continued his winning return from injury by battling through to the final of the British Universities and Colleges Sport competition in Sheffield.

Jenkins, who is defending the title he won last year, eased through two rounds at Coventry University last weekend as he re-establishes himself in the sport after sustaining horrific injuries in a fall at Symonds Yat last March.

In the quarter-final at Coventry, Jenkins stopped his opponent James Bonsor from Sheffield University in the third round.

"I started strongly and never gave him chance to set his feet, always pushing him back with my jab and hooking to the body when inside," said Jenkins. "Mid-way through the third round, the referee stopped the contest after a third eight count."

The city man continued his fine form in the semi-final against Loughborough University's James McKeon, whom he also beat in the competition's final last year.

Jenkins dominated throughout and forced his opponent to retire midway through the second round.

"Mckeon hit the ropes and had nowhere to go, so I moved in with combinations that he could not overcome," said Jenkins.

Jenkins will now fight Eric Nwanko at the finals at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield on February 22.

The comeback star will be ringside for the sell-out international show in Hereford on March 1 when elite level boxers, some of whom will be competing in the Commonwealth Games, will be battling it out for the Hereford Times Cup.

It is the first elite level international where headguards will not be worn for senior boxers.

and Mckeon was from Loughborough university.
