BRIAN Weaver was a double winner when Marden Cricket Club held their annual dinner and awards presentation at Burghill Valley Golf Club.

The former Woolhope all-rounder collected the bowling and player of the year awards from club president Eddie Haslam.

Sam Pratley retained the batsman of the year award, amassing 499 runs, while Harry Stretton and Declan Barrett received the young player of the year awards after breaking into the senior side in 2013.

Chairman Nick Ashton received the clubman of the year award for his hardwork in developing the club.

Outgoing captain Rupert Lawrence commented on the difficulities faced in playing in Division One of the GB Liners Marches League, but praised all players for their efforts.

He emphasised the outstanding fielding of the side, which had been commented on by opposition and umpires, and the fabulous team spirit displayed.

Ashton then gave an impassioned speech about the need for small community clubs like Marden to thrive.

He praised the work of Pete Gale who has taken over as junior co-Ordinator and explained the vision of increasing the clubs commitment to junior cricket.

He also spoke about plans in place to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the club.

Guest of honour Glyn Harrhy, cricket development manager for Herefordshire Cricket Ltd also addressed the audience, outlining Herefordshire Cricket Board's support of smaller clubs like Marden and felt the club is a role model to such community sides.
