THE memory of Wye Police Boxing Club's treasurer, Jim Smith, will be honoured at an international amateur show in Hereford in March.

Hereford coach Vince McNally says the inaugural Jim Smith Memorial Cup will be presented to the best boxer at the show.

It will be the first show in England in which elite-level senior boxers are competing without wearing headguards under international rules.

And it will be the first England international performance-programmed boxing show of 2014.

McNally said the event would be a fitting way to remember Jim, who died aged 69.

"Jim took over at a time when the club were desperate for a treasurer and no-one else wanted to do it. He did an excellent job for around four years."

McNally and fellow coach Richard Roberts have stepped up to work with the Amateur Boxing Association of England to organise the show on March 1.

A full international squad from Wales are taking on the best boxers in England for the Hereford Times Cup.

All England boxers are full internationals on the England performance programme.

Last year, Wales Select regained the Hereford Times Cup after a 5-4 victory over Midland regional coach Keast’s England Select.

Roberts said: “We are very excited to be able to bring top-quality boxing to Hereford in the year of the Commonwealth Games.

"We want to continue to show boxing in a positive way - the Hereford Times Cup is now a nationally recognised event.

"We are lucky to be working with our partners Hereford Sixth Form College and Hereford City Rotary Club, on this charity show to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy."

Mark Abberley, who grew up in Weobley, is the chief executive of the Amateur Boxing Association of England.

He was impressed by the last show and made the offer to turn this year's event into a full international

“It’s fantastic to see so many people from the local community supporting the show," said Abberley.

Tickets for the show at Hereford Sixth Form College are available from the City of Hereford Rotary Club by calling 07769320766 or 07798755715.
