Ross chairman Paul Haley praises pack after Gloucester 2 derby win over Westbury

ROSS chairman Paul Haley praised his pack after a hard-fought local derby win in Gloucester 2.
Although Ross were eventually comfortable winners, they were only able to pull away in the closing stages as a result of good work done in the early exchanges, said Haley.
“This victory was built on an heroic rear action scrummaging first-half performance by the Ross tight five Matt Redman, Craig Boughton, Sam Chappell, Jake Christopher and Wayne Williams,” he said.
“This tired out their forwards which opened the door later in the game for Ross to move the ball and exploit the space which, although belatedly, they did with great precision in the last 10.”
Ross fell behind to an unconverted try after strong home pressure, but Gavin Oates and Jake Christopher combined to level the scores, with two successful penalties giving the south Herefordshire side an interval advantage.
In the second-half, however, Westbury forced a series of penalties and three successful kicks restored their lead and put the game in the balance.
But Ross proved their strength and scored four tries without reply in the final 15 minutes.
Centre Dan Field raced through for a try which he converted himself before Eddie Ruck and Ollie Floyd finished some fine handling with good scores.
Winger Craig Smith set the seal on the win with a 70-yard dash to score.
