Herefordshire's Roger Matthews retains the Welsh Historic Rally Championship

DRIVER Roger Matthews has retained the Welsh Historic Championship title - and has big plans for next season.
Matthews, from St Weonards, teamed up with new navigator Paul Morris to repeat his title success of 12 months ago. Matthews and Morris, who lives in Ross-on-Wye, sealed the crown by just five points after winning their section at last weekend’s Cambrian Rally.
The duo will be entering the MK 1 Escort RS into next season’s Roger Albert Clark (RAC) Historic Championship, which starts in Llandovery at the end of January.
“This was my first season with Paul - his dad, Mick Morris, was my co- driver 20 years ago. Mick and I didn’t win anything - we just did the odd rallies.
“Paul and I won our category six times out of eight rallies this season and that was after I had driven into trees in one of the early rounds.”
He added: “We will be stepping up to the Roger Albert Clark (RAC) Historic Championship next season but we will also doing the Wyedean Rally.”
Last November, Matthews joined forces with Mike Jode to win the Welsh Historic Championship - Matthews’ first title in 29 years.
