Vince McNally and Richard Roberts will organise Hereford's first Home Nations Grand Prix international amateur boxing show
HEREFORD will host its first full boxing international in the run up to the Commonwealth Games.
The top amateur boxers from England and Wales will be fighting it out in a Home Nations Grand Prix show at Hereford Sixth Form College.
The event - for the Hereford Times Cup - will take place on March 1 and feature England talent squad boxers who are part of the national programme.
It will be the first England international performance-programmed boxing show of 2014.
Hereford coaches Vince McNally and Richard Roberts are organising the show on behalf of the Amateur Boxing Association of England (ABAE).
“The show will be on St David’s Day and is a fully capped international event,” said McNally.
“Both international squads will be fighting for the Hereford Times Cup.”
The Home Nations Grand Prix show is just four months before the Commonwealth Games open in Glasgow.
Roberts, also chairman of Wye Police Boxing Club, said: “It is an honour to be asked to work with the best boxers and coaches in the country, to put on such an event.
“We could not turn down the chance of bringing full international boxing to Hereford and raise money for Muscular Dystrophy.”
McNally, also the secretary of Wye Police, and Roberts have visited the national performance centre at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.
“We were invited up to Sheffield and have met the likes of Richie Woodhall and Olympic boxers Fred Evans, Nicola Adams and Andrew Selby,” said McNally.
“Now the ABAE bosses want to come to Hereford and hold a prestigious show in the city with the best amateur boxers from England and Wales,” added McNally.
Tickets for the show will be available in December through the City of Hereford Rotary Club.
