Bartestree win at Gornal to stay third in West Midlands League Division One
4:00pm Wednesday 9th October 2013 in Sport
BARTESTREE continue to fly the county flag in Division One of the West Midlands League and remain in third place after a 4-2 success at last season’s Division Two champions Gornal Reserves.
The villagers got off to a fine start when Dean Dreweszki and Dan Hill set up Kiea Cowley for an opener after four minutes.
Cowley added a second after good build-up play from Gareth Bowley and Mat Wargen.
With 18 minutes played, Bartestree took a complete hold on the game when Marc Avery rose to head in a Cowley corner.
Defensive errors allowed the home side back into the game with goals either side of half-time.
But, 10 minutes from the end, Bartestree underlined their win when Mark Langford fired a free-kick into the corner of the net.
Unbeaten Lye were given a battle by Wellington before winning 3-1.
The home side got off to a great start when a long goal-kick deceived the villagers’ defence, leading to a goal for Andy Mitchell after only two minutes.
Wellington were unlucky not to draw level on a couple of occasions when Aaron Morgan had shots well saved.
Andy Price was then off target following a Sam Archer-Plane corner before Wellington equalised with Steve Brotherwood’s corner going straight into the net.
Wellington continued to defend strongly at the start of the second period and, after good work by Jamie Yau, Morgan had a chance to put them in front.
Town regained the lead on 75 minutes when substitute Ricky Anslow scored when Eden was only able to parry the initial shot.
Lye sealed the win through Damien Whitcombe’s penalty. Pegasus Juniors’ sequence of games without a win was extended to four when they drew 1-1 at Willenhall.
Dan Campbell scored for the home side but Juniors fought back to level through Zac Brimble.
Bromyard conceded four second-half goals to slide to a 5-1 reverse at home to Dudley Town after a penalty from Ciaran Sheehan had fired them level.
Ledbury Town suffered a 7-1 defeat at Trysull. Jamie Welch scored for Town.
Lads Club bounced back from their disappointment at Ledbury last weekend with a 3-0 victory at struggling Hanwood United.
