LEOMINSTER’S Barons Cross Inn hosted a thrilling final round in the West Midlands Lawn Mower Racing Association series.
And Matt Cable from the Weedy Gonzales team proved a cut above the rest, clinching the championship.
WMLMRA club chairman Neil Sparey, representing The Baiting House, was second overall and Rob Silver took third spot in the final standings.
“Most people probably think we’re a bit mad and some people who to see us fall about with laughter,” said secretary Roger Thirlby.
“But we are serious about our sport and it’s a good crowd entertainer.”
Lawnmower racing is a form of motorsport in which competitors race modified lawnmowers.
The original mower engines are kept, but the blades are removed for safety reasons.
Drivers can reach speeds of around 30mph and events have taken place this summer in Clifton, Upper Sapey, Stanford Bridge and Broadheath.
The association have, over the years, made substantial donations to the Air Ambulance, SARA and various other charities.
The next evening meeting takes place at The Baiting House, Upper Sapey, on Monday, October 30 at 7.30pm.
