Westside lose to Copsewood Diamonds in opening clash in West Midlands Netball League
3:00pm Wednesday 25th September 2013 in Sport
AN inexperienced but promising Westside team began their West Midlands League Division Two campaign with a 45-32 defeat against Copsewood Diamonds.
The starting line-up of Steph Snowzell (GK), Kayleigh Mumford (GD), Kate Bishop (WD), Harriet Major (C), Anna Mulderrig (WA), Harriet Rimmer (GA) and Kara Wellings (GS) got off to a slow start with the experienced Diamonds defence dominating and creating many turn over chances, which their shooter had no problem scoring from. After the first quarter, which ended 17-5 to the Diamonds, Mulderrig and Major swapped positions in a bid to keep Westside’s attack flowing and the city side were able to fight back.
Major and Rimmer worked the ball well around the circle and Mulderrig and Bishop created chances for turnovers in centre court, ending half-time with just nine goals difference at 25-16.
Excellent defensive work from Snowzell and Mumford in the third quarter gave Wellings more chances on goal which she confidently converted.
But Diamonds shot accurately, too, and the quarter ended at 36-26.
The last quarter was closely fought with Snowzell defending the circle to earn the player-of-the-match award and linking up with Mumford and Mulderrig to bring the ball down court.
But despite hard work and determination from Westside, Diamonds held on for the win.
Westside under-19 also took to the court in the new under-19 West Midlands League and had a closely-fought match against Shropshire’s Blue and Golds, losing 35-31.
