Tributes paid to Herefordshire sportsman Pat Ellis
1:00pm Wednesday 18th September 2013 in Sport
ALL-round sportsman Pat Ellis has died suddenly at the age of 71.
Ellis had been preparing to serve as president of Bowls Herefordshire in the forthcoming year but had also made his contribution in other sporting spheres.
He played weekend cricket for Bulmers and in the Evening League for MEB, where he worked, before serving as an umpire.
It was out in the middle as an official that he made a long-standing contribution to local and regional football.
“He was a Southern League referee and refereed an HFA County Challenge Cup final,” said HFA chief executive Jim Lambert.
“He served the HFA for 28 years and was made a life member in 2006.
“He loved his sport and had been absolutely devoted to his bowls for the last five or six years.”
Ellis was a fixtures and referees secretary for the Herefordshire Football League and, in a sad coincidence, another former HFL official has also died this week.
Derek Senior, who served as HFL secretary, has died while working in Iraq.
Pat Ellis leaves a widow, Margaret. Details of his funeral will be available from Dawe Brothers on 01432 274066.
