Denmark-based fan Roger Lundberg travels to see Hereford United's match with Aldershot Town
ONE of Hereford United’s furthest-travelled fans will be celebrating a significant anniversary when he attends the Bulls’ home game with Aldershot Town tomorrow (Friday) night.
Roger Lundberg is travelling over from his home in Vester Skerninge in Denmark for the match, which will be exactly 30 years to the day since his first Hereford game, a League Cup tie at Portsmouth which the Bulls lost 3-1.
Lundberg began supporting the Bulls following the Newcastle game and has been a member of the club’s programme subscription group, organised by Ron Parrott, almost ever since.
“He has brought his wife Maibritt and son Johannes to Edgar Street on occasions and Johannes has been a mascot at a game,” said Parrott.
“Despite coming over regularly, it was nearly 10 years before he saw his first win (and his wife’s first game) at home to Torquay in October 1992.
“Roger has been a good friend to the club and regularly sponsors a player and usually a match ball when he comes over.”
His latest trip promises to be an action-packed sporting weekend.
“Roger is sponsoring the ball for the Aldershot game and is hoping to extend his run of four wins and a draw in his last five games,” said Parrott. “He is staying the night with us, then going to Newport to see them against Morecambe on Saturday and on Sunday he is running the Bristol half-marathon.”
Parrott is also a leading light in a major project being launched by the newly-formed Hereford United Supporters Trust.
“The trust are to start a former players association to bridge the gaps between United’s past, present and future,” said Parrott. “We would like people to provide us with contact details for as many former players as possible. We will then contact individual players to ask them for other players’ details and believe that numbers will escalate rapidly.”
A former player will be nominated as chairman with additional committee members being made up of other former players, trust members and club representatives. Contact Ron Parrott by email at email@example.com or the club on 0844 2761939 with any details.
Fans will have a chance to mingle with a number of current and former players at the launch of a new book Hereford United - A Pictorial History at the Starlite Rooms this evening (Thursday) at 7pm.
Rob Purdie, Luke Graham, Colin Addison, Tommy Hughes, John Layton, Dudley Tyler and Graham Perkins will be among the Bulls stars from this and past generations joining authors John Williamson, Ron Parrott and Richard Prime to sign copies of the book.
“We would welcome any other former players who would like to attend,” said Parrott.
For each book sold on the night, a donation of £5 will be made to Hereford United.
The Bulls, who visit Nuneaton Town next Tuesday, are looking to encourage young fans to attend tomorrow (Friday) night’s game with Aldershot Town by charging just £1 for tickets for five-to-15-year-olds. Under-fives will continue to get in for free.
