CITY of Hereford Swimming Club’s James Bilbao has stormed to gold at the Welsh Summer Nationals.
The 12-year-old was in dominant form, smashing 12 seconds off his 200-metre breaststroke personal best in just seven weeks.
Carla Thornewell and Lydia Stratford also won medals and the girls’ 4x100m medley relay team were also triumphant.
Patrick Blake shrugged off a long spell of injury and illness to put in a fine display at the British Gas National Age-Group Championships in Sheffield.
Blake managed his best time in 18 months, swimming a 1.00.22 to fall just short of his life-time best.
He has reflected on the year positively, and is keen to get more from next season with the Commonwealth Games just around the corner.
Grace Alexander also attended her first British Youth Nationals on the back of being crowned Welsh National Champion over the 200m freestyle.
She competed in the 400m freestyle, putting in a strong performance to become the seventh ranked 17-year-old in the country.
Head coach Alex Dallimore said: “We have gone from a developing club to being one of the top age-group programmes in the country.”
He was also delighted with the performance of his British National Qualifiers. Anyone interested in joining the club should email at: Headcoach@ Swimhereford.co.uk
