HEREFORDSHIRE masters athlete Steve Herington has collected a gold medal in the male 65 division at the World Masters Mountain Running Championships in the Czech Republic.
Herington finished in 11th place and linked up with Ben Grant, a Scot who runs for Harrogate, who finished second and Dic Evans, a Welshman who is with Cardiff AC and came home eighth, to earn gold for Great Britain in the team race, beating both Germany and Italy by a solitary point.
Sue Davies, of Croft Ambrey, placed 15th in the female over-45 category, just missing out on a team silver medal.
The race was held in the north of the country in a ski resort close to the Polish border and featured five-and-a-half miles of uphill running with a total climb of more than 2,000 feet.
“The course climbed the full extent of the Cerna Hora in the famous Krkonose range,” said Herington.” “In English, Cerna Hora translates as the Black Mountain so, living in the shadow of our own Black Mountains where I train, I suppose I felt some affinity for the place.”
