World Superbike victory for Herefordshire ace Chaz Davies at Nurburgring
1:30pm Wednesday 4th September 2013 in Sport
HEREFORDSHIRE motorcycle ace Chaz Davies was a winner on a memorable day for his BMW Motorrad Team in the FIM World Superbike Championships at the Nurburgring.
Davies won the second race after finishing third in the first and, with his team-mate Marco Melandri registering a second and third place, it was the first time that BMW Motorrad had both drivers in the podium in both races.
“I am super happy with the victory in race two,” said Davies. “I was already happy with my podium in race one but I knew that we could improve and so we did.”
Davies started race one from sixth on the grid but moved up to third on the first corner.
He and Melandri stayed well in touch with race leader Tom Sykes and Davies was well-placed to challenge for the lead when the race ended with a red flag after injury to Jonathan Rea and Leon Camier.
Melandri led from the start in race two but Davies took over on lap seven and it was a thrilling battle from there on, with the BMW pair and Eugene Laverty contesting the lead until Davies re- established the lead on the 16th lap, two circuits before the race was again stopped by a red flag.
“I was thinking there couldn’t be another red flag but just in case I tried to stay in the lead,” said Davies.
“In the end, the red flag came and I was in the right place at the right time.”
Davies is now fifth in the riders’ classification with 221 points and four rounds to go.
