Engine failure damages Darren and Sue Underwood's REIS National Rally Championship hopes

DARREN and Sue Underwood’s hopes of retaining their class lead in the REIS National Rally Championship at the EventSigns Mewla Rally over the Epynt military asphalt roads near Brecon were dashed by engine failure.
The Herefordshire Motor Club crew had put in a good performance to gain a commanding class lead of two-and-three-quarter minutes.
“We were having a good run, the car was working well and the Michelin tyres were giving plenty of grip,” said Darren.
“We had no warning of a problem but this engine has been a reliable motor for five years so we can’t complain.”
From a high quality field of entrants, Peter Lloyd and Carl Sorenson won overall in an Impreza S14. “When we had to retire, we were 22nd overall which was great, but it was the class win which we were needing and that was achieveable,” said Sue.
“It was a quick rally, and we had one moment on a hairpin when the car went up on two wheels but thankfully it came back. Of course we are disappointed with this engine failure but that’s motorsport.”
With only three rounds remaining in the REIS Championship, it is unlikely the Leominster pairing will continue their challenge.
