Herefordshire driver Lea Wood wins again in hunt for British Touring Car Championship's Jack Sears Trophy
HEREFORDSHIRE’S Lea Wood is hot favourite to win the British Touring Car Championship’s inaugural Jack Sears Trophy.
Wood added another success to his tally in Knockhill and, although his nearest rival Liam Griffin won the other two races, the 29-year-old leads the series 10-6 with only nine more races and three meetings to go.
Finances, however, remain a major obstacle for Wood’s Wheel Heaven/Houseman Racing team.
“We are still seeking sponsorship and we’re flying by the seat of our pants at the moment,” he said. “We have three weeks before the next round at Rockingham on September 14 to put things together.”
Wood and Griffin enjoyed some thrilling battles in the latest round in Scotland.
“Liam just pipped me in qualifying,” said Wood. “We put some new tyres on and didn’t quite get the grip I thought I would and he ended up 100ths-of-a-second in front of me.
“In the first race, he was again just in front of me.
“Knockhill is a very narrow circuit and it’s difficult to overtake - I was pressurising him but he didn’t crack.”
It was a similar story in the second race where Wood let a couple of the potentially faster NGTC cars through which then blocked off his chance of overtaking Griffin.
But, in the final round, Wood finally gained his revenge in another exciting race.
“He was in front of me on the grid again but I overtook him twice only for him to go up the inside and take me back on both occasions,” said Wood.
“But then he got spun around coming out of one of the bends so I was able to go through.”
Wood’s 12th-place finish also earns him points in the national championships and is a major confidence booster ahead of Rockingham.
“We just need three more Jack Sears wins to take the overall trophy and it would be great to get that at Rockingham,” he said.
“We will certainly be giving it our best shot.”
