FORMER Herefordshire cricketer Chris Woakes is playing in the England Test side for the final Ashes Test at the Oval.
Warwickshire all-rounder Woakes, who has played in 13 One-day and four Twenty20 internationals, joined fellow new cap Simon Kerrigan in the England side to take on Australia.
Woakes played four times for Herefordshire in the 2006 and 2007 seasons, three times in MCCA Knockout trophy matches and once in the Minor Counties Championship. All of his appearances ended in defeats.
He is the first Herefordshire-connected player to be picked for the England Test side since the Richardson brothers, Dick and Peter.
Peter played 34 times for England between 1956, when he scored an Ashes century in the famous Test when Jim Laker took 19 wickets, and 1963 while Dick gained one Test cap, against the West Indies in 1957.
