Terrible Tim Witherspoon to speak at Hereford United fundraiser

HEREFORD United will be hosting a former world heavyweight champion later this month.

Tim Witherspoon, who held the WBC and the WBA titles during the 1980s is a rare non-footballing figure to appear at one of the Bulls’ popular Sportsman’s nights.

The 55-year-old was also a sparring partner of Muhammad Ali in his early career before going on to hit the heights himself.

Witherspoon outpointed Greg Page to take the WBC title in March 1984 and, after losing that belt, became the WBC champion by defeating Tony Tubbs in January 1986.

He is probably best remembered in this country for defending the title against Frank Bruno at Wembley Stadium when he stopped the British fighter in the 11th round.

He lost the title to James ‘Bonecrusher’ Smith in December 1986 but continued his career, off and on, until the age of 45.

He will speak in the Starlite Rooms on Friday, March 22, and will remain in the city to be a special guest at United’s home game with Hyde the next day.

Tickets for the Sportsman’s Evening are available at £40 by calling the club on 0844 2761939.
