EVERY week a leading figure from Hereford United will be giving his or her view on activities at Edgar Street. This week, it’s the Hereford United Independent Supporters Association chairman Keith Dodd.

IT was great to get back on the winning trail on Saturday and we certainly deserved the victory.

The previous four or five games may have done for our hopes of a play-off spot but I still believe that we’re only a midfield general short of being a very good side.

I thought from the outset that we could be a top five team but the injury situation means that we have fallen short of that this season.

But if we can keep the youngsters that Martin Foyle has brought in, then it’s all looking good for next year.

Naturally, it is a worry for all of us to see the drop-off in attendances.

Our home form has been very disappointing over the last two or three years and, from that point of view, I can understand why people are not going.

But, as much as anything, I believe the level of support reflects the jobs situation around the city and the general economic position.

Certainly, a lot of people have disappeared from the Meadow End and, particularly, when we have two games in a week, it becomes expensive.

At HUISA, we still have a solid membership which has, in fact, increased considerably this season.

We’ve been dragged into the 21st century with our own website and we are raising good money for the club.

We need all the fundraising to continue as with attendances at matches slipping, it’s more important than ever that we have a good source of income off the field.

Part of my role at the club has been to assist Dave Preedy and Ellen Moore in running the Starlite Rooms, which are bringing in the sort of off-field income which the club has not had for years.

I help out by booking the entertainment for the monthly cabaret and tribute nights and I’m also a key-holder so I go down to lock up twice a week.

The reopening of the club has brought a huge boost to the cash-flow but we will also be bringing pressure to bear on Herefordshire Council about the £100,000 bond which was placed concerning the re-building of the supporters’ club.

That was clearly recorded in HUISA’s minutes and while we know that £18,000 was used for office refurbishment, the remainder would come in very handy just to complete one or two things which would turn the Starlite Rooms into the sort of top-class function and cabaret room which I do not believe is available anywhere else in the city.

It is not a private members’ club; it is open to everyone and is there for the whole community.

I’m also delighted that the football club is getting back to being what it used to be, a family club for the community.

The players get on well with the fans and are playing their part while we have the sort of stability at management and boardroom level that we require if we are to get back where we belong and where we desperately need to be, into the Football League.

So please get behind the team and come down to Edgar Street to cheer them on as we make a bid for the play-offs.
