HEREFORD battled back from two adrift to gain a point against visiting Southport.
Goals from Ryan Bowman and Josh O’Keefe earned the Bulls their third successive home draw on a very tacky Edgar Street pitch.
Hereford boss Martin Foyle  decided to change his goalkeeper with Dan Hanford coming back into the side in place of James Bittner.
With Harry Pell and Will Evans now departed, there was a debut for loanee Kingsley James as Foyle reverted to a 4-4-2 formation.
With the players looking glad to be back in action, there was a lively start with Hereford doing most of the attacking towards the Blackfriars End.
And the Bulls missed a good chance to take the lead when Ryan Bowman’s flick put Sam Clucas in the clear.
The young midfielder steadied himself but saw keeper Tony McMillan block his shot.
Bowman tried to follow up but the ball was taken off his foot by a defender.
It was Southport, though, who forced the first corner on 12 minutes when Shaun Whalley’s cross was blocked.
But a foul allowed the Bulls to relieve the pressure.
Skipper Stefan Stam conceded a second corner on 19 minutes but James headed Karl Ledsham’s flag-kick away.
As Southport started to establish themselves more in the game, Godfrey Poku sent a shot high over from the edge of the area.
But the Bulls hit back and Marley Watkins’ shot deflected behind off James Smith for a corner.
On 32 minutes, though, Whalley broke clear of the Hereford defence when an attempted clearance broke invitingly and he lashed a shot past Hanford.
But Bowman missed a great chance to level within seconds, scuffing yards wide after Watkins got around the back of the Southport defence.
The Hereford defence, though, looked far from secure and a cross from Andy Owens flashed through the Bulls six-yard box.
A more promising Hereford move saw Watkins make some space in the area to cross for Chris Sharp, who failed to get a good connection on the ball.
Hereford forced an early free-kick on the left at the start of the second period but Stam nodded the cross from Clucas a long way wide.
Hereford’s defence still looked shaky and Josh O’Keefe did well to get a corner off the line.
Then the first yellow card of the game arrived for Scott Kay’s poor challenge on Andy Corbett.
James quickly followed the Southport man into the book for a bad foul on Kay.
Godfrey Poku was the next to receive a caution for a foul on Clucas.
Hereford were starting to show a little more urgency and forced a corner from which finds Stam’s on-target header easily saved.
But, at the other end, the game’s outstanding player Whalley forced another corner.
Clucas made a hash of clearing the flag-kick and the ball reached Whalley again.
This time, his cross was headed over Hanford by Neil Byrne.
Hereford made a couple of substitutions  in a bid to get back into the game but were lucky not to fall further behind when Aaron Chalmers’ sweetly-struck 30-yarder came back off a post.
Hereford were back in the game on 75 minutes when Clucas found Bowman to slot a shot past McMillan.
And the Bulls got back on level terms when O’Keefe received the congratulations after the ball went into the net following a Clucas free-kick.
But Whalley almost won it at the death when he was given too much space by Rod McDonald, only to fire wide.
