WESTSIDE are up to second place in the West Midlands Netball League Second Division after a hard-fought 41-31 win over Shrewsbury rivals Recycles.

The city team started with a line-up of Helen Hancock GS, Ellie Smith GA, Stacey Barker WA, Anna Mulderrig C, Aimee Phillips WD, Steph Snowzell GD and Debbie Bowdley GK.

Westside made a strong start and tight marking by Mulderrig and Phillips in mid-court allowed many turnovers from some fine interceptions from player-of-the-match Phillips.

Strong circle defence from Bowdley and Snowzell added to the pressure on Recycles attack causing many errors and turn-over balls, allowing Westside to finish the first quarter up at 11-4.

Recycles changed their attack in the second quarter and fought back but fine shooting from Hancock and Smith retained Westside’s lead at half-time.

Westside brought Emily Davies on at WD with Phillips moving to GK and Smith and Hancock switching positions.

This allowed more movement in Westside’s attack allowing Barker to feed in to Smith at GS while Mulderrig applied pressure to the mid-court again.

And Westside pulled away to end the third quarter at 31-22 before some great defensive work throughout the court during the last quarter meant they were able to capitalise more from turnovers to finish victorious .
