Westoe 17 pts Luctonians 13

LUCTONIANS director of rugby Alex Davidson says it will be ‘a strange feeling’ coming face-to-face with Birmingham and Solihull.

The giant lock spent eight seasons at the then Championship club before joining Luctonians as director of rugby in 2010.

But he will put all personal feelings aside at Mortimer Park on Saturday as his current team aim to bounce back after losing at Westoe.

“It will be a bit of a strange feeling because I spent so many years at Birmingham and Solihull and I’ve still got a couple of friends there,” said Davidson.

“But from a selfish point of view, I want to get back to winning ways at Luctonians.

“There have been a lot of changes at Birmingham in that they have had successive relegations and there has been a big turnaround of staff.

“But if we are set up right, then we can dominate a young Birmingham side.We have just got to work hard and make sure that we have a total game put together to claim a victory.”

Luctonians once again came unstuck away from home last Saturday, but are hoping that head coach Andy Williams will be able to play against Birmingham and Solihull.

“He has had a groin strain and is trying to concentrate on his coaching,”

said Davidson.

“But I will try to convince him to play on Saturday to settle the ship as he has got great experience and leadership.

“There are a lot of able players in the team, but possibly not enough leaders.”

Against Westoe, Luctonians took the lead through a Jake Newman penalty, but Westoe got back into the game when fly-half Jordan Carey found space to race under the posts for a try, which Matt Mellish converted.

Newman and Mellish both scored further penalties, before the home side took the game way from Luctonians in the second-half.

Ryan Beattie raced through to go under the posts to score a try, which was converted by Mellish. With 20 minutes left, Paul Hulland grabbed a try for Luctonians, which was converted by Will Burton. Despite an onslaught, Luctonians fell short.
