Westfields 3 Boldmere St Michaels 2

SUBSTITUTE Wayne McNeil struck his maiden goal for 10-man Westfields in an action-packed Midland Alliance clash.

The former Wellington man hit the winner with a 20-yard drive after the hosts had fought back from 2-1 down and the set-back of Marcus Giglio’s red card.

While one ex-Wellington player was smiling at the finish, there was disappointment for another.

Will Perkins, who now lives in Birmingham, was playing for Boldmere.

All the goals arrived in the final 33 minutes and fifth-placed Westfields looked in trouble when Giglio was dismissed by referee Roger Goodwin for handling on the line. Joe Smith’s spot-kick put third-placed Boldmere 2-1 ahead but Westfields staged a superb fight-back.

Richard Kear prodded home the leveller after visiting keeper Lewis Fenney had parried a shot from Aidan Thomas. And then, with time running out, McNeil’s low drive beat Feeney after Craig Jones had cut open the visitors’ defence.

Earlier, Sean Edwards’ men broke the deadlock in the 57th minute when Phil Glover headed home Joel Edwards’ free-kick.

However, Boldmere drew level within four minutes when Smith scored from the penalty spot.

Westfields are 11 points behind leaders Stratford Town and travel to 16thplaced Continental Star this Saturday.
