Bartestree have to settle for point against Riverway

BARTESTREE paid the price for easing up in their West Midlands Division Two clash and had to settle for a point after taking an early two-goal lead.

Dan Hill opened the scoring with a cross-cum-shot after just five minutes and then Tom Parry, one of five under-18s included in the squad due to injuries and suspensions, added a second with a good finish.

Parry was unlucky not to add a third shortly afterwards but then some poor defending allowed Riverway to pull a goal back.

And then, just before the interval, a Riverway player was allowed a free header to level the scores. Fifteen minutes from the end, Matt Wargen tried to dribble the ball out of defence and was robbed by a Riverway striker who put the visitors ahead.

But Hill saved a point five minutes from the end when he rose to meet a cross from Callum Omelasz and headed home.

Ledbury Town 3 Penkridge Town 0.

LEDBURY have soared to the top of the West Midlands League Division Two after a fine run which has seen them score 28 goals without reply in five matches.

The Penkridge keeper pulled off fine saves from Dan Herbert and Tom Boyle before the New Street side took the lead just before the break.

After a Jamie Welch effort had been disallowed, Herbert, who had scored five times the previous week, broke the deadlock with a well-placed header.

Penkridge also had a goal ruled out before, on 70 minutes, Welch headed home to extend the lead.

And then, with 15 minutes remaining, Boyle rounded off a fine afternoon for the home side when he headed in third. In the closing stages, Boyle twice went close to adding a fourth.

l Herefordshire FA Under-18 have finally been named as Midland Counties Youth Champions for 2011-2. But it’s been a long wait for the county side who completed their fixtures in March and then had to wait for others to finish their programmes. When everyone had completed their games, Herefordshire and Birmingham were joint top of the division but the Midland side took the trophy due to their better goal difference. However, Birmingham were found to have played a contract player in their final two matches and so were stripped of the six points they had gained as well as being fined £250. This left Herefordshire to, belatedly, celebrate title success.
