Temple nears go-ahead

12:38pm Tuesday 28th November 2000

A NEW Sikh temple in Gravesend is a step closer to being built now the Government has given the go-ahead for organisers to buy the land.

At the moment, there is a gurdwara in Clarence Place, but it is not big enough for the expanding Sikh community.

Temple organisers got outline planning permission from Gravesham council a few months to build a new temple in Trinity Road subject to certain conditions.

Now they have got permission to buy the land in Trinity Road from the Secretary of State but they are still waiting for the Government to give the go-ahead to build. Doctor Rajbinder Singh, who is involved in the temple plans, told the News Shopper: We are now one step closer to being able to build a new temple.

The last few months have been very frustrating while we have been trying to get these plans for the temple off the ground.

He added: Hopefully, we will hear from the Government soon about whether we can build on the site.

The conditions set out in the outline plan for the temple address residents concerns about increased traffic in the area and noise.
