The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds has objected to council plans to fell trees in Crystal Palace Park.
A senior RSPB officer has written to Bromley Council secretary Walter Million, warning him felling the trees breaches the law.
The council wants to make way for a multiplex cinema.
But the trees must go before the nesting season starts at the beginning of March or the felling will have to be shelved.
Ken Livingstone's environmental advisor, Darren Johnson, has even written to EC commissioner Margot Wallstrom to try to stop the felling.
There are 140 trees earmarked for the axe.
Trees which are home to nesting birds are now protected by law.
