THERE have been mixed consequences for two prominent Tenbury politicians following the local elections in May with Phil Grove moving from leader to back-bencher on Malvern Hills District Council.

Ken Pollock, who was re-elected as member for Tenbury on Worcestershire County Council, has retained a place in the cabinet of the controlling Conservative group.

He has responsibility for infrastructure and economic development.

Phil Grove, who represents Tenbury on Malvern Hills District Council and has been its longest serving leader has made no secret of his disappointment at not being offered a role in the new administration.

“It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing I am standing down as leader of the Conservative group and therefore leader of Malvern Hills District Council,” said Phil Grove.

“When I was first elected to the role two years ago, I said I would only serve two terms. That has now come to an end and so I am sticking to my word and have withdrawn my name for re-election as leader.

“I am very proud of everything that has been achieved under my leadership. When I took over, the council was a toxic brand with a reputation that had been badly damaged by in-fighting and allegations of improper conduct.

“Today, I leave it in a much better place. Officers and councillors are once again working in harmony to deliver for our residents.

“We have a five-year plan which sets out our vision for this district and is a clear signal of our ambitions going forward.

“We have a business plan which shows how we will balance the books while protecting frontline services.

“We're working harder than ever to re-engage with our residents and ensure their views play more of a role in our decision-making.

“Having laid the foundations for a stable and successful future for the council and the district, I feel now is the right time for a new person to take charge. Someone with a fresh pair of eyes and potentially a new approach to the problems that lie ahead and the difficult decisions that need to be taken.

“I'd like to pay tribute to all the staff and my fellow councillors, of all parties, for their support, advice and their constructive challenge over the last two years.”

“I wish my successor the best of luck and will continue to serve residents in my role as Tenbury Ward councillor.”

But Councillor Grove has made it clear that he is disappointed not to have been offered one of the portfolios in the new administration.

“I've been leader of Malvern Hills District Council from 2009-2012 and 2015-17, a total of five years, making me the longest-serving leader," he added.

“I was not offered a portfolio by the new leader and would have welcomed the opportunity with 14 years experience as a district councillor.”

There were no elections for Malvern Hills District Council but Phil Grove was re-elected to Worcestershire County Council where he sits as a Conservative representing Hallow.
