YOUNG people from Matchborough had a special treat last week when they were visited by a boxing champion.

WBA Super flyweight world champion Kal Yafai visited Redditch Borough Council’s Active Kitchen project.

Birmingham born Yafai spent time discussing his career and dedication to his sport with the young people signed up to the project, who were also treated to some boxing training as Kal donned the pads.

Chris Wells, club and coach development officer, said: “This was a great chance to provide the young people with motivation from an inspirational role model, who is proof of what can be achieved through belief and hard work.

The Active Kitchen project was run by the council’s sports development team in partnership with West Mercia Police, and the PAZ Youth Centre and provided young people two hours of sport and a healthy hot meal every day.

This latest, five day Active Kitchen club comes after a successful pilot project took place earlier this year.

The projects aim to help families who might struggle to entertain and feed their children over the holiday period.
