POLICE are probing an allegation of racist abuse towards Redditch United defender Orrin Pendley, from an opposing fan at Tuesday night's visit to Kettering Town.

More than 600 people were at the Evo-Stick South League fixture between the the two sides on August 15 when a home supporter allegedly made a racist slur against Pendley.

The player reported the incident to the match referee shortly before half-time and club stewards evicted the individual from the ground, but no details were taken.

PC James Condon, from the Northamptonshire Police's Football Unit, said: "We are working closely on this with both the club and the Kick it Out anti-racism campaign.

"There is no place for behaviour such as this in a football ground and we are appealing for supporters to help us identify the individual behind this incident which we are treating as a hate crime."

Pendley took to Twitter following the game.

He said: "Make sure they sort it. That stuff can't run."

In a club statement, Kettering Town added: "Kettering Town Football Club operates a zero tolerance approach to such behaviour.

"The club apologises to Redditch United, the player involved and everyone else present and assure you all that we are dealing with this matter."

Anyone with information about the incident should call Northamptonshire Police on 101 quoting 17000351658, or ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
