THE commonwealth flag has been raised by Malvern Hills District Council to mark Commonwealth Day 2018.

Council leader David Chambers and chairman Chris O’Donnell raised the flag above the Council House in Avenue Road on Monday.

It was one of 1,000 commonwealth flags flown in countries around the world as a celebration of the organisation’s values of peace, democracy and equality.

The Commonwealth Affirmation was also read out which stated the flag was being raised as a symbol of the ties of kinship and affinity cherished by member countries, and their commitment to democracy, development, respect and diversity.

The theme for Commonwealth Day this year was Towards a Common Future, the aim being to bring focus on how the commonwealth can address global challenges and work to create a better future for all citizens through sustainability, prosperity and fairness.

Cllr O’Donnell said: “This was an opportunity for Malvern Hills District to join with communities across the commonwealth in demonstrating the strong bond and friendship we share and our commitment to strengthening it further.”
