A BRITAIN'S Got Talent semi-finalist is calling on residents in the district to vote for the Alzheimer's Research UK to become the charity of the year at Kidderminster Sainsburys, in honour of his grandmother.

Harry Gardner, 17, pulled on the heartstrings of the nation when he performed his song 'Not Alone' about his nan, Maureen.

He penned the song after seeing how dementia had affected her and released it to raise vital funds for Alzheimer's Research UK. Harry's performance won him a place in the semi-finals of the ITV show, but sadly Maureen, a former Sainsbury's employee, died before his appearance.

Now, the charity, which funds pioneering research into dementia and the diseases that cause it, is in the running to become the next charity partner of the Kidderminster supermarket - and Harry is calling on residents to vote, following the kindness Sainsbury's showed his nan.

Maureen worked on the checkouts at a Sainsbury's store in Essex, from the day it first opened and she was the longest running employee when she left in 2013 - after developing symptoms of dementia. The store kept her job open, although she was unable to return as her symptoms worsened over time.

He said: "Working at Sainsbury's was a big part of my nan's life and they were incredibly kind to her when she was diagnosed with dementia, even though she was unable to go back.

"It would be great to see stores up and down the country show the same support for people with dementia everywhere by selecting Alzheimer's Research UK as their charity partner, so we can raise the vital funds needed to defeat the condition."

Vicky Lake, regional corporate partnerships manager, added: "There are 850,000 people in the UK living with dementia, with 8,650 in Worcestershire alone.

"Through research, we know we can defeat dementia - but we need your help. So please vote for Alzheimer's Research UK to become the charity partner in your Sainsbury's store."

You have until Sunday, June 25, to vote in the Carpet Trades Way store, or by visiting sainsburyslocalcharity.co.uk.
