AN EVESHAM psychedelic rock-and-roll trio are launching their second EP in the city this weekend.

As Mamas, whose ‘Parte Dois’ EP was released this week, will be performing at Paradiddles in Sidbury on Saturday (March 17).

Comprised of singer and guitarist Harrison Baird-Whitman, drummer Joe Devine and bassist Jacob Coley, As Mamas play 60s psychedelic, rock and roll blues.

Singer Harrison Baird-Whitman spoke with the Worcester News ahead of the launch.

“This is probably our fourth of year of playing together,” he said.

“We recorded our first EP in a little caravan that is at the bottom of my garden and then after that we played as much as we can locally and in Birmingham. We’ve also played quite a few times in London.”

The four tracks on ‘Parte Dois’ were partly recorded by Dave Gordon at Neon Sound Studios with guitar, vocals and other tweaks added by Harrison in his caravan.

The launch at Paradiddles follows a gig at The Sunflower Lounge in Birmingham last week (March 10)

“It went really well. I don’t know how much The Sunflower Lounge holds but the room was full. We took a minibus full of friends and fans down.”

Following on from the successful launch in Birmingham, Baird-Whitman is looking forward to the second launch in Worcester.

“It’s going to be great. I’m just happy to get the EP out to be honest. It’s been lying around for about a year now.”

As Mamas’ music pays a debt to the raw fuzz-filled garage rock of the 60s as well as recalling some of the psychedelic blues records made by Howlin Wolf and Muddy Waters during that time.

Whilst the 1960s is a musical pinnacle for Baird-Whitman, he says he is also a huge fan of contemporary bands such as Thee Oh Sees, Night Beats and Ty Segall.

“In terms of influences, I’m a massive fan of the 60s so that’s what all I tend to listen to but then I’m also a big fan of new bands that have that retro sound,” added Baird-Whitman

“When we recorded the final track on the EP [Idles Eyes] I was going through a really big reggae phase so that definitely had an influence.”

Originally a duo, Jacob Coley joined on bass in January and the band hopes to have an album recorded by the summer in time for a launch before Coley goes to university.

The gig at Paradiddles on Saturday is free and begins at 7pm. As Mamas will be supported by Ledbury’s Pablo Alto and Worcester’s Keys.
