A DRIVER has been described as "lucky" after escaping a crash involving a jackknifed lorry with minor injuries.

The incident took place at junction 4 for the A38 Bromsgrove at around 10am on Tuesday, December 12, closing all three lanes on the M5 southbound.

West Mercia Police warned of severe disruption and Highways England have also warned of "long delays".

Very slow traffic is being reported on the M5 and A38 while cars are routed around the junction and back on.

Police and two fire engines are currently dealing with the incident, which has also led to a large spillage across the carriageway.

Central Motorway Police Group say the recovery will take "several hours" and have warned drivers to avoid the area.

They added: "Driver is lucky to get out with minor injuries."

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent an ambulance and two paramedic officers to the incident and treated the lorry driver on the scene for hand injuries.

* UPDATE: All lanes re-opened by 3pm.
